Board of Director Biographies

 

Jason Smith : District 1 : Diagonal
Jason lives one and a half mile south of Diagonal, works for Southern Iowa Rural Water Associates and farms as well. Jason is on the Farm Bureau Board, Ringgold County FSA Board, Eagle Lake Board and is also a member of the Diagonal Lions Club. In his spare time Jason enjoys spending time with family and friends. His hobbies include hunting and fishing. top

 

Marilyn Werner : District 2 : Shannon City 
Marilyn and her husband Steve live on a farm north of Tingley where they engage in livestock and grain farming. They have two daughters, one son and six grandchildren. Marilyn has a master's degree from Iowa State University and is retired from 23 years of employment at Southwestern Community College as Assessment Coordinator. She is active in the Tingley United Methodist Church and currently serves as trustee. She is a past president and past secretary of the Iowa ACT Council as well as past president of the Iowa Community College Student Service Association. Marilyn is an active volunteer in her community and has held various offices in Chapter P.E.O. Special interests include gardening, reading and photography. She has served on the REC Board of Directors since 1993, and is a credentialed director having completed the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's Director Program. Directors who hold this distinction are required to attend classes and demonstrate understanding of competencies contained in five core electric utility courses. top

 

Dale Walkup : District 3 : Redding
Dale and his wife, Sharon, live on a farm east of Redding. Their family includes daughters Amy and Ann, and son James. Dale and Sharon have five grandchildren. The Walkups have a corn/bean row crop farming operation and a cow/calf herd. Dale is currently a Ringgold County Conservation Board member, Clinton Township Trustee, Treasurer of Redding Frontier Days, and a member of Redding United Methodist Church. He has served on the REC Board of Directors since 1980. He is also Southwest Iowa REC's representative on the Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) board, our power supplier. top

 

Richard "Dick" Ballantyne: District 4 : Lamoni
Dick and his wife Bonnie live on a farm near Lamoni. They have three children and three grandsons. Dick has cattle, corn, soybeans and hay on his farm, but was raised on a dairy farm. He is a graduate of Iowa State University in Farm Operations.  He has served on the Decatur County Farm Bureau board, the Lamoni Community School board and the Bloomington Congregation Community of Christ. In his spare time, he enjoys attending the Iowa State Fair, reading and deer hunting.  Dick has served three terms on the Southwest Iowa REC Board of Directors. top

 

Ken Peppmeier : At-Large Region 1 : Shannon City
Ken and wife Lori live near Shannon City. Their family includes daughter Brooke (Patrick), daughter Ayla, and son Zack. They have three grandchildren. Ken has a farming operation and is also a rural mail carrier.  He belongs to the Arispe Methodist Church, where he has served as a trustee, as well as serving on the Afton Volunteer Fire Board, Grant Township Trustee, and Union County Fair Swine Committee. top

 

Deena Moore : District 5 : Corning
Deena and her husband Corey live on a farm near Corning, Iowa. They have 3 daughters Mikayla, Kennedy and Joslynn. Deena has a Bachelor’s of Science degree from the University of Iowa and is currently employed as the legal assistant for Engel and Maharry, PLC in Corning. She is also an active member of the Corning United Methodist Church and the Icarian Players. She has been active with various committees within the church. She has also been a volunteer soccer, basketball and softball coach for the Corning Youth Club for many years.  Her special interests currently are attending her children’s extra-curricular activities, camping, and horseback riding. top

 

 

District 6 : Open
 

Dana Morgan : District 7 : Corning
Dana and wife Dena live near Corning. They have one daughter, Addison. Dana is the Vice President of Sales at New Balance Commodities in Nodaway. He is also the owner of Morgan Land & Cattle Company and is the Vice President of the Adams County Cattlemen. He has served as Secretary on the Iowa County Ducks Unlimited Chapter and has been involved in the Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program and with the Agriculture Future of America (AFA). top

 

Dennis Meier : District 8 : Villisca
Dennis and his wife Lynn have two sons: Daniel and David. They have a farming operation and raise corn/beans/hay and cattle. The Meiers are members of the Bethesda Lutheran Church. top

 

Mark Herzberg: At-Large Region 2: Villisca
Mark and his wife Dawnette have four children: Chelsea, Jackie, Emily, Olivia and three grandchildren.  They have a farming operation near Villisca. Mark is also an Asgrow-Dekalb and Wyffels seed dealer. He is active in the Mt. Calvary Church, FFA Alumni and is a past UFMC Associate Board member.  Being on the Southwest Iowa REC Board of Directors has been a learning experience for Mark.  He enjoys working with the rest of the board members, staff and management to guide the Cooperative. top
